Same practice, two very different numbers โ€” which one you get depends on who's buying and how ready your books are. Closing that gap is preparation work, and it's what the full appraisal workbook and Your Practice, Your Price are built to do.

Why one practice gets two different numbers

Buyers don't value your practice the same way. Understanding both lenses is how you stop leaving money on the table.

The collections lens

An individual dentist buyer tends to price you at roughly 60%โ€“80% of your annual collections. It's simple, conservative, and financing-driven.

The EBITDA lens

A DSO prices you at a multiple of adjusted EBITDA โ€” about 4×โ€“7×, and higher for a well-prepared, scaled, or DSO-attractive practice. Often the bigger headline number.

Dental practice valuation: common questions

How do you value a dental practice?

Most valuations use a percentage-of-collections rule of thumb (about 60%โ€“80% of trailing-twelve-month collections for a general practice) or a multiple of adjusted EBITDA (about 4×โ€“7×, higher for scaled or DSO-attractive practices). A full appraisal reconciles both with discounted-cash-flow and market-comparison views.

What is the rule of thumb for dental practice value?

The common rule of thumb is 60%โ€“80% of annual collections for a general practice. Strong fee-for-service practices land higher; PPO- or Medicaid-heavy practices land lower.

What EBITDA multiple do dental practices sell for?

Single general practices typically trade around 4×โ€“7× adjusted EBITDA. Well-prepared, DSO-attractive practices can reach 7×โ€“8× or more, and multi-location platforms trade higher, roughly 9×โ€“15×.

What's the difference between EBITDA and SDE?

EBITDA is earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization after paying a market-rate dentist for the owner's clinical work. SDE adds the owner's total compensation back. Smaller practices are often valued on SDE, larger and DSO deals on EBITDA.

Is this the same as a certified appraisal?

No. This calculator gives a fast, directional estimate for planning. It is not a certified appraisal or legal, tax, or financial advice. Engage a qualified appraiser, a dental M&A attorney, and a dental CPA before selling.

How accurate is a free valuation calculator?

It's a starting point. Real value depends on payer mix, location, specialty, staff stability, lease terms, and buyer type, which a two-input tool can't fully weigh. Use it to get oriented, then run the full appraisal.
