Why Dental Transparency Is the Competitive Advantage Practices Are Sleeping On
I want to make an argument that might surprise you coming from someone who has spent 25 years on the supply side of dentistry.
Price transparency is not a threat to dental practices. It is, for the practices willing to embrace it, one of the most powerful patient retention and acquisition tools available right now.
Here's why.
The Trust Gap Is Real — And It's Getting Wider
Survey after survey shows the same thing: patients don't trust the dental industry's pricing. A 2023 JADA study found that a significant percentage of patients suspected they had been recommended unnecessary treatment. Whether that suspicion is warranted in any individual case is almost beside the point. The perception exists, and it affects behavior.
Patients are delaying treatment. They're skipping follow-ups. They're going to in-network providers they don't prefer because they at least trust the contracted rate. And they're not referring their friends and family with the enthusiasm they once did.
This isn't a clinical problem. It's a trust problem. And trust problems have trust solutions.
What Transparent Practices Are Learning
The practices that have leaned into fee transparency — explaining their pricing, welcoming second opinions, proactively connecting patients with benchmark resources — are finding something interesting: patients stay.
When a patient asks "is this a fair price?" and you can point them to an independent resource that confirms your fees are competitive, you've done something remarkable. You've turned a moment of doubt into a moment of loyalty.
The patient who walked in skeptical and walked out reassured is not just a retained patient. They're an evangelist.
How DentalQuoteCheck.com Changes the Equation
DentalQuoteCheck.com is a free, independent tool that lets patients benchmark any dental quote against real market data for their ZIP code and procedure.
For practices priced fairly — which is most practices — this tool is unambiguously good news. When patients can check their crown quote and see it falls at the 55th percentile for their market, they're not going to walk out the door. They're going to schedule.
For practices priced at the high end, the tool creates a productive pressure. If your fees are in the top quartile, patients deserve to understand the value that justifies it — the experience, the technology, the materials, the time spent. That's a conversation worth having.
The Strategic Recommendation
If you're a practice owner or dental director, I'd encourage you to do two things this week:
First, run your own most common procedures through DentalQuoteCheck.com for your ZIP code. Know where you stand. If you're in the normal range, that's a marketing asset. If you're consistently above the 80th or 90th percentile, ask yourself whether your value communication is keeping pace with your fees.
Second, consider sharing the tool with your patients proactively. A brief note in your post-appointment email — "we encourage you to benchmark any quote you receive from us" — is a powerful signal. It says: we are so confident in our pricing that we're handing you the measuring stick.
That kind of confidence is rare in healthcare. Patients notice. And they remember it when they refer their neighbor.
